Midgard literally means “middle enclosure,” referring to its position as the middle realm in a series of interconnected worlds. These realms include Asgard, the home of the gods, and Hel, the realm of the dead.
In the ancient belief system, Midgard served as the bridge between the divine and mortal worlds. The gods, specifically the Æsir, created Midgard from the body of Ymir, a primordial giant. From his flesh, the land was shaped, and from his blood, the seas were formed. The gods also erected a protective barrier, the ocean, to keep giants from entering the human realm. Humans in Midgard live under the gods’ protection, and their fate is influenced by the Norns, who spin the threads of destiny.
As the dwelling place of humans, it holds a central role in Asatru. It represents the balance between the mortal world and the divine. While humans live ordinary lives in Midgard, they honor the gods, ancestors, and nature’s spirits through blóts (offerings) and rites. The connection between gods and humans shapes Asatru’s values, emphasizing courage, honor, and responsibility in daily life. By respecting its gifts and the gods’ guidance, followers of Asatru strengthen their spiritual and earthly ties.
Midgard’s Connection to the World Tree
Midgard is not an isolated realm. It exists within the greater structure of Yggdrasil, the World Tree, which connects all the realms. This vast ash tree holds it in its branches, linking it to Asgard and other worlds. Travel between realms is possible through Bifröst, the rainbow bridge, guarded by Heimdall, one of the Æsir gods. Midgard’s place within Yggdrasil represents the interconnectedness of all life.
The Elder Futhark rune associated with Midgard is Eihwaz, which symbolizes Yggdrasil and the connection between life and death. This rune stands for endurance, strength, and resilience, much like the way humans must persevere in Midgard through life’s challenges. Eihwaz reminds Asatru practitioners of their place in the cosmic order and the importance of living a life grounded in honor and truth.
