Gríðr (pronounced “GREE-thr”) is a powerful and wise giantess (Jötunn) who plays an important role in protecting the gods. Known for her intellect and strength, Gríðr intervenes at a pivotal moment to aid Thor on his journey to confront the treacherous giant Geirröd. Unlike many other Jötunn who stand in opposition to the gods, Gríðr supports them, especially in times of great danger. She is often depicted as a figure of caution, wisdom, and loyalty, setting her apart from other giants who seek to disrupt the balance between gods and the world.
The most well-known story involving Gríðr occurs when Loki, using trickery, leads Thor into a trap set by Geirröd. Thor, unaware of the plot against him, sets off unarmed to face the powerful giant. Along the way, he stops at Gríðr’s home, where she learns of his perilous situation. Understanding the gravity of the trap and Thor’s vulnerability, Gríðr steps in to help. She gives Thor essential items for his journey: a magical belt of strength (megingjörð), iron gloves, and a staff called Gríðarvölr (Gríðr’s staff).
With these gifts, Thor becomes much stronger and better prepared for the upcoming battle. When he finally reaches Geirröd’s hall, Thor uses Gríðr’s gifts to survive the giant’s attacks and ultimately defeats him. Without Gríðr’s foresight and assistance, Thor would have been at a severe disadvantage.
Gríðr is notable for her unusual loyalty to the Æsir, despite being a Jötunn. Her role highlights the nuanced relationships between the gods and giants, proving that not all Jötnar stand against the gods. Gríðr’s wisdom, strength, and willingness to help define her as a protector and ally of the gods.
