Odin (OH-din), also spelled Óðinn (OH-thin), stands as one of the most influential figures. His name means “fury” or “inspiration.” Alternate spellings include Woden and Wotan. Odin belongs to the Æsir and serves as their leader. He rules from his hall, Valhöll (VAHL-hol), or Valhalla, where warriors chosen by his Valkyries prepare for the final battle, Ragnarök.
Odin’s pursuits focus on wisdom, war, and poetry. He sacrificed one of his eyes at Mimir’s well (MEE-meer) to gain unmatched knowledge. He also hung himself on Yggdrasil (IG-drah-sill), the World Tree, for nine days and nights to discover the runes. These sacrifices highlight his relentless drive for enlightenment and power.
Odin’s companions include Huginn (HOO-gin) and Muninn (MOO-nin), ravens representing thought and memory. They travel the world, bringing him knowledge. His wolves, Geri (GEH-ree) and Freki (FREH-kee), embody his connection to primal forces. Sleipnir (SLAPE-neer), his eight-legged horse, carries him across realms.
The Prose Edda and Poetic Edda detail many of Odin’s adventures and roles. These writings depict him as both a wise and cunning figure. He often disguises himself to interact with humans and gods, using trickery and charm to achieve his goals. Odin’s multifaceted nature makes him both revered and feared. He leads the Æsir but also influences death, poetry, and fate, reflecting his wide-ranging power.
