He resides in a hidden underwater cave, guarding his gold and magical ring, Andvaranaut (AHD-vah-rah-naut). This ring possesses the power to generate endless wealth, making it a symbol of greed and fortune.
Andvari’s tale is recorded in the Völsunga Saga and Poetic Edda. Loki encounters him during a quest to settle a debt with Hreiðmarr (HRAYD-mar), a powerful chieftain. Loki captures Andvari in the form of a fish using a magical net. When forced to surrender his treasure, Andvari tries to keep his ring. Loki discovers this and takes the ring as well.
Enraged, Andvari curses the gold, ensuring misfortune and death for anyone who possesses it.
