Yggdrasil, pronounced “IGG-drah-sill,” stands as the immense World Tree connecting all realms. The tree’s roots and branches reach across the nine worlds, supporting life, wisdom, and unity. The Poetic Edda and Prose Edda mention Yggdrasil often, describing its vast network of roots and its essential role. This mighty ash tree links realms like Asgard, Midgard, and Helheim, making it central to gods, humans, and other beings.
Yggdrasil’s three main roots extend to powerful sources. One root reaches the well of Urd (pronounced “OORD”), where the Norns—beings who shape destiny—live. Another root extends to Mimir’s Well, offering wisdom to those who drink from it. The third root leads to Hvergelmir (“HVUR-gel-meer”), a spring filled with life-giving energy. These sources enrich Yggdrasil, and the tree, in turn, enriches all the realms.
Creatures inhabit and interact with Yggdrasil, adding layers to its meaning. At the top perches an eagle with keen eyesight, watching the worlds. A squirrel named Ratatoskr (“RAH-tah-tos-kur”) scurries up and down the tree, carrying messages between the eagle and Nidhogg, a dragon gnawing at the roots below. This interaction symbolizes tension between growth and destruction, strength and decay.
Every element of Yggdrasil carries symbolism. The tree’s height signifies striving for wisdom and connection, while its deep roots represent stability. It holds the realms together, embodying life’s complex, interconnected nature. It serves as a powerful reminder of balance, resilience, and the continuous cycles of life and death.
Runes Associated with Yggdrasil
The Elder Futhark rune Eihwaz (pronounced “AY-wahz”) connects deeply to Yggdrasil. This rune signifies protection, endurance, and the cycle of life and death, mirroring Yggdrasil’s role in uniting worlds and energies. Ansuz (“AHN-sooz”), a rune for communication and wisdom, also relates to Yggdrasil, as the tree brings wisdom from Mimir’s Well and ties the worlds together.
