Járnviðr (YAR-n-vith-ur), also spelled Járnvid or Jarnwidu, translates to “Iron Wood” in Old Norse. It is a mysterious and foreboding forest mentioned in Norse mythology 
, particularly in the Völuspá, part of the Poetic Edda. This forest lies to the east of Midgard and serves as the dwelling place of Járnviðjur (YAR-n-vith-yur), a group of female giants or troll-women. These beings are known as the “Iron Wood Women.”
The forest plays a significant role in mythological prophecy, especially regarding the events leading to Ragnarök (RAH-gna-rohk). According to the Völuspá, the Járnviðjur are responsible for raising monstrous wolves destined to wreak havoc during Ragnarök. Among these wolves is Sköll (SKOHL), who chases the sun, and Hati (HAH-tee), who pursues the moon. Another infamous offspring from Járnviðr is Fenrir (FEN-reer), the monstrous wolf fated to slay Odin.
