Fimbulvetr (pronounced FIM-bull-vet-er, meaning “mighty winter”) is a term from Norse mythology describing a harsh, unrelenting winter. This winter signals the prelude to Ragnarök, the end of the gods and the world as known. “Fimbulvetr” may also appear as “Fimbulwinter” in modern English texts, though this term is less traditional. The Gylfaginning section of Snorri’s Prose Edda describes it vividly, highlighting its impact on the world and humanity. 
This catastrophic event consists of three successive winters without intervening summers. During Fimbulvetr, intense cold blankets the earth, and relentless snowstorms rage. The sun becomes obscured, plunging the world into near darkness. Crops fail, leading to widespread famine and societal collapse. People fight desperately over dwindling resources, sparking wars and chaos.
The Völuspá in the Poetic Edda also recounts this ominous period, emphasizing its devastating effects. Brothers turn against brothers, and kinship loses its value. The moral decay mirrors the physical destruction caused by the unyielding winter. According to lore, these trials cleanse the world, paving the way for renewal.
