Lagertha (Lathgertha, Ladgerda): A Legendary Shieldmaiden: Tīwaz Elder Futhark Rune

Lagertha (pronounced LA-ger-tha) was a fierce shieldmaiden and the wife of Ragnar Lothbrok (RAHG-nahr LOAD-brock). Her name can also appear as Lathgertha or Ladgerda in older texts. Lagertha’s story comes from Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum, where she is celebrated for her courage and skill in battle. She defended Ragnar’s forces when he sought her help to reclaim his lands from invaders.

Lagertha first appeared during a conflict where she fought off attackers who had besieged her homeland. Impressed by her bravery and battle prowess, Ragnar pursued her. Despite her initial resistance, they married after he proved his worth. The couple had children, although their relationship ended when Lagertha divorced Ragnar and returned to her own lands.

After separating from Ragnar, Lagertha became a ruler in her own right. She maintained control of her lands and defended them from threats. According to the Gesta Danorum, she fought with cunning and strength, demonstrating her tactical intelligence. One story tells of her slaying her husband after he threatened her authority.

The Gesta Danorum describes Lagertha as a warrior equal to the best male fighters of her time. Her tale serves as a reminder of the vital roles women could play in leadership and battle. Though not directly mentioned in the Eddas, her legend has inspired many interpretations over the centuries, reflecting her enduring legacy.
