The Prose Edda, written by Snorri Sturluson, mentions trolls when describing monstrous creatures tied to Jötnar (YOHT-nahr, meaning giants). These beings often symbolize chaos or threats to the natural order. They appear in folktales as beings that turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. This trait aligns with their aversion to civilization and the human world.
In Icelandic sagas, trolls sometimes interact with heroes. The Grettis Saga describes a troll-woman confronting Grettir, challenging his strength and cunning. In other tales, they display magical abilities, such as shapeshifting or using illusions to confuse their foes. Their supernatural powers make them both feared and respected.
Modern depictions of trolls vary widely, from grotesque monsters to comical figures. However, older traditions depict them as formidable opponents.
