Seiðmenn (pronounced “SAY-th-men”) practice the art of seiðr (pronounced “SAY-thr”), a form of Norse magic. This practice involves divination, prophecy, and manipulation of the world through supernatural means. The term “seiðmenn” specifically refers to male seiðr practitioners, while female practitioners were known as vǫlur (pronounced “VOH-lur”). Seiðr is detailed in the Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, and various sagas, including Eiríks saga rauða (“Saga of Erik the Red”).
Seiðr rituals often required entering a trance state. Practitioners used chants, rhythmic movements, and staffs to connect with spiritual forces. The ultimate goal was to gain insight into future events or influence outcomes in the physical world. Seiðmenn often acted as advisors, guiding rulers and communities through uncertain times.
Although seiðr was powerful, it carried social stigma, especially for men. Practicing seiðr was seen as ergi (pronounced “AIR-ghee”), a term implying effeminacy or moral weakness. This perception stemmed from the belief that seiðr involved yielding control to supernatural forces, considered inappropriate for men in a warrior-focused society. Despite this, notable figures like Odin (OH-din) practiced seiðr. His association with the craft challenged traditional gender norms and highlighted the value of wisdom over societal expectations.
Seiðmenn were not just magicians but also intermediaries between realms. They bridged the mortal world and the divine, ensuring balance and harmony. Their abilities allowed them to navigate the unknown, making them both feared and respected figures in Norse culture.
