Njord (pronounced “NYORD”) is a Vanir god, known for his influence over seas, winds, fishing, and wealth. He is highly regarded for his ability to bring calm seas, good fortune in fishing, and prosperity in trade. His name sometimes appears as “Njorth” or “Njörðr” in various texts, including the Prose Edda and Poetic Edda, where he is central to the story of the Æsir-Vanir War. Following the war, Njord and his children, Freyr and Freyja, live with the Æsir as a peace treaty between the two divine groups.

His marriage to the giantess Skaði represents this balance between sea and mountain, though their union faces challenges. Skaði, a lover of mountains and snow, finds Njord’s seaside home unbearable. Njord, in turn, dislikes Skaði’s mountain realm. They eventually live apart, showing that even gods must sometimes choose different paths to find happiness.
The Poetic Edda mentions Njord’s wealth, describing him as able to bestow prosperity on anyone who calls upon him. His blessings include not only the bounty of the sea but also material wealth and well-being. Sailors and traders seek Njord’s favor for safety and success in their ventures. His deep connection to the sea and its unpredictable nature shows his strength and patience. He is a god who understands life’s ebb and flow, balancing both abundance and calm.
