Geirröd (pronounced “GAYR-roeth”) is a powerful giant known for his enmity toward the gods, particularly Thor. His name also appears as Geirröðr or Geirrödr. He lives in his fortress called Geirrödargardar, located deep in the land of the giants. Geirröd is infamous for his cunning and cruelty, often setting traps for his enemies, especially for the gods.
One of the most famous tales involving Geirröd is when Loki, in falcon form, is captured by the giant. Loki, known for his trickery, is forced to reveal information about Thor in exchange for his freedom. Geirröd then hatches a plan to ambush Thor and kill him. He invites Thor to his hall but insists that the god leave behind his hammer, Mjölnir, as well as his belt of strength, Megingjörð, and his iron gloves, Járngreipr.
Thor, unaware of the trap, begins his journey. Along the way, he visits the giantess Gríðr, who warns him about Geirröd’s intentions. Gríðr equips Thor with her own belt of strength, an iron staff, and a pair of iron gloves, arming him against the giant’s treachery.
When Thor arrives at Geirröd’s hall, the giant tries to kill him by throwing a molten iron bolt. Thor catches the bolt with the iron gloves, then hurls it back at Geirröd with such force that it pierces the stone pillar the giant hides behind, killing him instantly. This encounter highlights Thor’s strength and cunning while showcasing Geirröd’s cruelty and treachery, making him one of the more memorable adversaries of the gods.
