Svaðilfari was renowned for his incredible strength and stamina. He belonged to a giant (jötunn) disguised as a mortal builder, who offered to construct a protective wall around Asgard. This wall would protect the gods from potential threats. The builder proposed to complete the job in just one winter, requesting Freyja’s hand in marriage, along with the sun and moon, as his reward. The gods reluctantly agreed, thinking the task impossible.
Unbeknownst to them, Svaðilfari played a crucial role. The powerful horse could haul massive stones with ease, allowing the builder to make swift progress on the wall. As the deadline approached, the gods grew anxious, realizing the builder might actually succeed. Loki, known for his mischief, devised a plan to delay the construction. He transformed himself into a beautiful mare to lure him away.
Svaðilfari, mesmerized by the mare, chased Loki into the wilderness. With his horse gone, the builder could not complete the wall in time. Upon realizing the builder was a jötunn in disguise, Thor intervened, and the gods avoided paying the builder’s steep price. Loki later gave birth to Sleipnir, an eight-legged horse, as a result of his encounter with Svaðilfari. Sleipnir became Odin’s loyal steed, known for his unmatched speed and agility.
