The River Ylgr (Ylg): Laguz Elder Futhark Rune

The Ylgr (Ylg) is one of the eleven rivers that flow from the primordial spring known as Hvergelmir. It plays an important role in Asatru, where rivers and bodies of water symbolize the flow of life and the connection between realms. Ylgr translates to “howler,” reflecting the belief in its wild and untamable nature. This river, alongside others, carries the waters that shaped the world in its earliest days.

Élivágar are a collection of rivers that include Ylgr. These rivers exist beyond the world’s edge, where the forces of chaos and creation meet. Their freezing waters pour from Hvergelmir, crossing the great expanse of Ginnungagap. They shaped the first life forms, including Ymir, the first giant. Ylgr’s roaring waters embody this chaotic power, marking it as a force both creative and destructive.

Ylgr’s importance to Asatru lies in its connection to the ancient cycles of death and rebirth. It reflects the natural laws that guide the faithful. Its unrelenting flow from the heart of creation reminds those who follow the old ways of the vital energies that shape and nourish life, as well as the chaos that must be managed and honored.

The Connection to Elder Futhark

Though no single rune directly represents Ylgr, the Laguz rune (ᛚ) strongly resonates with its energy. Laguz symbolizes water, flow, and the unconscious—the same forces that Ylgr represents. In readings, Laguz often speaks of journeying through turbulent emotions or spiritual transformation, which aligns with the river’s association with chaos and creation.

The unbroken flow of Ylgr mirrors the power of Laguz, reminding Asatruar to embrace life’s ebb and flow. By honoring rivers like Ylgr, followers attune themselves to the elements that shaped the world and maintain the balance between order and chaos.

Ylgr, along with the Élivágar, remains a powerful reminder of life’s raw forces, ever-present in Asatru’s sacred traditions.
