Njord (Njörðr)

Njord (Njörðr): Laguz Elder Futhark Rune

Njord (Njörðr), a prominent Vanir god in Norse mythology, plays a vital role in Asatru. As the god of the sea, wind, and wealth, Njord commands the forces of nature that sailors, fishermen, and coastal communities deeply respect. His association with prosperity extends to wealth through successful sea ventures, trade, and fertile fishing grounds. Followers of Asatru often invoke him for blessings of safe passage and bountiful harvests from the sea. He is the husband of the Goddess Skadi (Skaði).

Njord’s importance lies not only in his dominion over the ocean but also in his role as a mediator between the Æsir and Vanir gods. After the Æsir-Vanir War, Njord and his children, Freyr and Freyja, went to live with the Æsir. This exchange signified the end of the war and the unity between the two divine clans. His presence in Asatru rituals symbolizes reconciliation and cooperation, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace and harmony.

While no specific Elder Futhark rune is definitively tied to Njord, the Laguz rune most closely reflects his essence. Laguz represents water, intuition, and flow, all aspects related to Njord’s powers over the sea and navigation. This rune symbolizes a deeper connection to the natural world and one’s instincts, much like how Njord guides sailors through treacherous waters.

Asatru practitioners may invoke Njord during rites that seek prosperity, calm seas, or to reinforce personal intuition. His link to wealth, wisdom, and natural forces makes him an essential figure within the faith. Njord stands as a reminder of the Norse people’s reliance on the ocean for survival and their respect for the divine forces that shape the world.
