Raud the Strong (pronounced Rowth the Strong) was a chieftain and seafarer from the late Viking Age. Known for his defiance of Christian conversion efforts, Raud has a prominent place in Viking lore. His name also appears as Rauðr hinn sterki in Old Norse (Rauðr pronounced Row-thur with a rolled “r,” hinn sterki pronounced hin ster-key). 
The Saga of Olaf Tryggvason recounts Raud’s story. King Olaf Tryggvason sought to convert Norway and its outlying regions to Christianity through force. Raud, who lived in Salten, northern Norway, practiced the old faith and resisted Olaf’s efforts. Raud was also known for his immense wealth and his mastery of seafaring, exemplified by his dragon ship, one of the largest in Norway.
When Olaf’s men arrived to capture Raud, he eluded them by using his knowledge of the sea and weather. However, Olaf eventually captured him through treachery. The saga describes Raud’s execution in vivid detail. King Olaf offered Raud a chance to convert to Christianity, but Raud refused. Enraged, Olaf killed Raud by forcing a live snake down his throat using a horn. This act reinforced Olaf’s reputation for ruthless conversions.
