Leifsbúðir (pronounced “LAYFS-boo-theer,” meaning “Leif’s Booths”) was a temporary settlement established by Leif Erikson in Vinland. This site, referenced in The Saga of the Greenlanders and The Saga of Erik the Red, marks the first known European foothold in North America. Other spellings, such as Leifsbudir or Leif’s Booths, appear in various translations of these sagas.
Leif Erikson, son of Erik the Red, led an expedition westward from Greenland around 1000 CE. The sagas describe his discovery of lands he called Helluland (Flat-Stone Land), Markland (Forest Land), and Vinland (Wine Land). Scholars believe Leifsbúðir was located in Vinland, with evidence suggesting the settlement aligns with the archaeological site L’Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, Canada.
The sagas describe Leifsbúðir as a base for exploring the surrounding region. The settlers harvested resources, including timber, game, and wild grapes, which Leif noted in his naming of Vinland. The site held great significance for trade and exploration, marking the farthest western reach of Viking exploration.
Archaeological findings at L’Anse aux Meadows include Norse-style buildings, tools, and artifacts that match descriptions from the sagas. These discoveries confirm the presence of a temporary Viking settlement and highlight their advanced seafaring capabilities.
