Fáfnismál (pronounced: FAHV-nis-mahl) means “The Lay of Fafnir.” It appears in the Poetic Edda as a tale of wisdom and tragedy. This work focuses on Sigurd (Sigurðr) and the dragon Fafnir. Common spellings include Fafnismal or Fáfnismal. The story explores themes of greed, betrayal, and the quest for knowledge, making it a cornerstone of Norse mythology. 
The tale begins with Sigurd seeking advice from Regin, his mentor and Fafnir’s brother. Fafnir, once a man, became a dragon through his greed after stealing a treasure cursed by Andvari. Regin convinces Sigurd to kill Fafnir and recover the hoard, which includes the cursed gold and the powerful ring Andvaranaut. Sigurd agrees, setting out to confront the dragon.
Using his cunning, Sigurd digs a trench and hides beneath it. When Fafnir slithers over the trench, Sigurd drives his sword into the dragon’s heart. As Fafnir dies, he speaks to Sigurd, offering cryptic warnings about the curse tied to the treasure. These dying words convey deep wisdom about the consequences of greed and betrayal.
Later, Sigurd tastes Fafnir’s blood and gains the ability to understand birds. This newfound skill reveals Regin’s treacherous plan to kill him and claim the hoard. Sigurd then slays Regin, ensuring his survival. The story of Fáfnismál captures the complexity of human ambition and its often-tragic outcomes.
