Vinland (pronounced VEEN-land) was a region discovered by Norse explorers, likely in modern-day Newfoundland, Canada. Its name, derived from Old Norse, means “Land of Wine” or “Land of Grapes,” highlighting the region’s lush vegetation. The sagas of Erik the Red and Leif Erikson recount Vinland as a land rich in resources, with mild climates compared to Greenland and Iceland. Grapevines and wild berries symbolized the region’s fertility, making it an attractive destination for settlement and exploration.
Leif Erikson led the Norse expeditions to Vinland around the year 1000 CE.
