Ölrún, sometimes spelled Alruna, is a Valkyrie known for her mastery of magical arts and her connection to the otherworldly. Her name translates to “Ale Rune” or “Rune of Ale,” suggesting a deep connection to enchanted drinks or magical potions. Ölrún appears in the heroic poem Völundarkviða, part of the Poetic Edda. She plays a significant role in the tale of the legendary smith, Völundr. Along with two other swan-maidens, Ölrún comes to earth, where she weaves powerful spells.
In Völundarkviða, Ölrún and her sisters take on the form of swans and fly across the land, symbolizing their connection to shapeshifting and other forms of magic. The swan-maidens are found by Völundr and his two brothers. They live together for several years, but Ölrún eventually leaves, returning to the skies. Her departure marks a deep loss, as her time on earth brought both love and magical power to those who encountered her.
Ölrún stands out among the Valkyries for her focus on magic rather than just warfare. Her skill in sorcery allows her to influence fate and destiny through enchanted means.
