Laufey (pronounced LOW-fey), sometimes spelled Nál (NAHL), is a significant figure among the Jötnar (giants). She appears in both the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. Laufey’s name translates roughly to “leafy” or “full of leaves,” linking her to nature. Some sources also call her Nál, which means “needle,” possibly referencing slenderness or sharpness. She stands out as the mother of Loki, the complex trickster whose actions shape many stories.
Interestingly, the texts describe Laufey as delicate and possibly associated with trees or the earth. This association contrasts with the typical depictions of Jötnar as towering, fearsome beings. Her relationship with Fárbauti (FAHR-bow-tee), her consort, highlights the balance between opposites. While Fárbauti represents harsh forces like lightning, Laufey embodies gentleness. In the Prose Edda, Snorri Sturluson mentions Laufey briefly, mainly to establish Loki’s lineage. She appears in Gylfaginning as the mother of Loki, often described as “Loki Laufeyjarson” (Loki, son of Laufey). This maternal naming reflects her significance in Loki’s identity. The sagas offer little else about her, leaving much to interpretation and speculation. Despite this, her role as Loki’s mother and Fárbauti’s partner grants her an enduring presence in storytelling. Laufey serves as a reminder of subtle power and quiet strength, influencing major events indirectly.
